U2 was formed in Dublin in 1976. U2 formed in 1976 when the members were teenagers with limited musical proficiency. By the mid-1980s, however, the band had released several successful albums and developed a devoted international following, largely from extensive touring. By now, U2 has sold upwards of 170 million albums worldwide, and they have won 22 Grammy awards, the most of any rock artist.

How U2 Influences DublinAs part of the
Inspiring Cities 2007 Dublin Week, we search for traces of U2 in Dublin. So now that they have become a world hit, what can be found of them in Dublin?

U2 Wall

The site of the old studios is covered in graffiti from fans who have paid pilgrimage from all over the world.

The local area around it has become part of the pilgrimage for U2 fans. The band played some of their earliest gigs at the Waterfront Rock Café and currently record at Hanover Studios, both within 500 metres. Windmill Lane, 200 metres away, is the site of the 'U2 Wall', which is covered with graffiti by fans.

For U2 fans wishing to visit the site please note it is not sign posted at all and continuously tourists get lost looking for it. Look for the Bob Bushill furniture store which faces out on to the River Liffey, Windmill Lane is the street behind this.

U2 Tower

This is a photograph of a poster on a hoarding around a building site in Dublin. The poster mentions the new U2 recording studio which has yet to be built. I will add more U2 material as soon as possible. For more information about U2 please visit www.streetsofdublin.com/U2-info.htm

Windmill Lane Studios is a music recording studio located in Dublin, Ireland. It was opened in 1978 by Brian Masterson who is a company director and head engineer. Artists such as U2, Van Morrison, Sinéad O'Connor, and Elvis Costello have recorded there. U2 recorded their first three albums at Windmill.

It should be noted that this studio is no longer located on Windmill Lane, although it retains the name. Windmill Lane Studios has not been located on Windmill Lane for quite some time and was originally Ringsend Studios. Windmill Lane Studios was never set for demolition. It is situated in a protected building. U2's studio across the river from Windmill is set for closing. Windmill Lane will continue on in its current guise.

The U2 Studios are set to be demolished and replaced with apartments. Their replacement will be inside the largest tower in Dublin, the so-called U2 tower, set to be completed in 2010.
