Hoorn
CityPoem: Floating Poem by Jan Merx

A poem made in concrete letters, floating in the water that separates the Binnenluiendijk from the Julianapark in the city of Hoorn (The Netherlands). The City bought the piece of art from artist Jan Merx in 1991 at a local exhibition. The poem was placed in 1998.

Literal translation:

LOVE POSSESSES TIME
TIME IS NO REALITY
REALITY EXISTS ONLY IN DREAMING
DREAMING OF DEATH AND PLEASURE TELLS HAPPINESS
HAPPINESS LIVES IN LOVE
LOVE IMMORTAL MAKES LIFE LUCKILY TRANSITORY

About the author

Jan Merx (born in Simpelveld, The Netherlands, 1959) graduated in architecture at the Technical University of Eindhoven and the Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht. After his studies, he could start in a workshop for visual arts. Since then, he is active as artist.

In his own words, he is a general visual artist. He wants to develop and realise autonomous visual art, that carries an important paradox. He makes art works for existing or for sketched situations.

Jan Merx is multi disciplinary: architect, visual art, literature, philosophy and sound are involved. In Vlissingen he designed a pavement, in Smallingerland a gate, and in the hospital of Roermond he did another large project. Often his work is of a temporary nature, he cleans it up himself after some time. His work often has a dominant, provocative and sometimes even childish character.

Inspiring Cities Museum of CityPoems

Inspiring Cities CityPoemsInspiring Cities has collected many citypoems over the years, as well as organized salons with citypoets and cities doing special projects. We have two criteria for what a citypoem is: the intention must be poetic, and it must be in the public realm of cities. Shapes, form and locations can and do differ.

The Museum of CityPoems has citypoems from cities all over the world. From Alhambra to Zonnebeke, from Taipei to Lima.
