Inspiring Cities organises Jane Jacobs day in Rotterdam (31st of October 2009).

Jane Jacobs

In cooperation with the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) 2009, Inspiring Cities organises Jane Jacobs day in Rotterdam on 31st of October 2009.

Bike + film Rotterdam Noord

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was a strong advocate of urban living, mixed use and local economy. Although Rotterdam has profiled itself since the eighties as a high-rise city, the city does have a few mixed small scale city districts. Rotterdam Noord is a real "Jane Jacobs-district": convenience stores, workshops, a community garden, many initiatives and lots of fun on the street.

Experience Rotterdam North and meet the people who live and work. We start in the Rotabs-style center, which you can also visit. From there we start walking and cycling (in a walkinggroup or a biking group, so bringing your own bike is not necessary). Professionals including BVR, PWS, Stipo, Gallery on the Rotte, the Kinderparadijs Meidoorn Foundation, the University Rotterdam, Inspiring Cities and others talk about the different Jane Jacobs places here, the strength and the development of Rotterdam Noord.

In The Rotabs style center is the screening of the film "Urban Goddess: Jane Jacobs, Reconsidered" (Sharon Bliss, 2008) and "New York, the City and the World" (Ric Burns, 1999).
